Light micrograph of the chromosomes (karyotype, with G banding) of a female patient with cri du chat (cat cry) syndrome. Humans have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. In cri du chat syndrome there is deletion of the distal part of the short arm of one of chromosomes 5 (red). Affected infants cry like a kitten due to affected larynx and nervous system. Other symptoms are severe cognitive, speech and motor delays.
