FISH (fluorescence in-situ hybridisation) light micrograph of the chromosomes (karyotype) of a female with trisomy 13, known as Patau syndrome. Humans have 46 chromosomes arranged in 23 pairs. Trisomy 13 is caused by three copies of chromosome 13 (red). The symptoms of Patau syndrome include heart and kidney defects. Most cases of Patau syndrome are not inherited but occur randomly during the formation of egg and sperm.
