Caption

Coloured Computed Tomography (CT) scan (axial section) of the knee of a male patient aged 18, showing osteochondritis dissecans of the kneecap (patella). At top is the bone of the kneecap revealing a piece which has detached and fragmented. There is also fissuring of the patellar cartilage between it and the large tibia bone (at centre). Osteochondritis causes discomfort, swelling and sometimes locking of the joint. It usually starts in adolescence and its exact cause is not understood.
