Caption

Coloured X-ray (front view) of the left leg of a male patient, showing osteomyelitis (bone infection) of the tibia seen as patches of thinning in the bone. Osteomyelitis, which is more common in children, is usually caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, carried to the bone in the bloodstream. The infected bone becomes inflamed, painful, and a fever develops. Treatment is with antibiotics.
