Henry Norris Russell, US astronomer, seen in his graduation outfit. Russell (1877-1957) developed the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram in 1910, which showed a correlation between spectral types and absolute magnitudes of stars. Before this, he studied astronomy at Princeton University, USA, obtaining his degree in 1897 and his doctorate in 1899. He also earned the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1921.
