Vertikal-1 geophysical probe launch. Soviet Vertikal-1 rocket being prepared for launch from Kapustin Yar, Russia, on 28th November 1970. Vertikal-1 was an early mission of the Interkosmos program. It carried a payload of scientific instruments on a sub-orbital flight, reaching a maximum altitude of 487km. The instruments studied solar radiation and the geophysics of the upper atmosphere. It was carried on a R-5B launcher, a modified version of the SS-3 Shyster missile.
