Clifford Shull (1915-2001), US physicist. Shull is best known for his pioneering work on neutron scattering. Neutron scattering includes a variety of methods used to study the atomic and magnetic structures of materials, in which a sample is bombarded with neutrons (subatomic particles) and the way in which the neutrons scatter (bounce off or pass through the sample) is recorded. Shull was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics (shared with Bertram Brockhouse) for this work.
