European Union, 1973. Mosaic of satellite images from Landsat 5 and Landsat 7, showing the European Union (EU) in 1973. North is at top. The six founding countries ('The Inner Six') are Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and West Germany. In 1951 these formed the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), and in 1957, they formed the European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) alongside the ECSC. In 1967 the Merger Treaty combined the three to be collectively referred to as the European Communities (EC). In 1973 the EC enlarged to include Denmark, Ireland and the UK.
