Caption

Ocean current speed. Computer visualisation of ocean surface current speeds. Major ocean currents (coloured white) are visible, such as the Agulhas current (eastern side of Africa), the Brazilian current (southern South America), North Equatorial current (northern South America) and the West Wind Drift (around Antarctica). This model is part of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) project. It was created on supercomputers at NASA using data gathered from ocean sensors and satellites. ECCO models will help scientists better understand the role the ocean plays in climate change and climate prediction.
