Flight Opportunities asteroid mission, illustration. This robot spacecraft has legs with microspine grippers designed to explore a rocky surface, such as on this asteroid, in microgravity. This design is part of the Flight Opportunities programme, where payloads such as this are matched with rocket launches. No funds are provided for the development of the payloads. The Flight Opportunities Program is managed at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center. NASA's Ames Research Center manages the selection of payloads. Image published in 2014.
