Caption

X-ray (oblique view) of the left foot of a patient, showing osteoarthritis in the metatarsal joint of the big toe. Degenerative changes at the first metatarsal-phalangeal joint, with outgrowths of bone, are seen. Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that damages the cartilage between joints due to wear and tear. As cartilage cannot repair itself, new bone grows causing swelling, stiffness and deformity.
