Cordouan lighthouse. Gironde river mouth near Bordeaux, France. This elegant lighthouse was designed by Parisian architect Louis de Foix. It was first lit in 1611 and stood 15 metres high. Every floor was covered in gilt, carved work, elegantly arched doorways and statuary. It was replaced in 1788.
