Human chorionic gonadotrophin molecule. Computer model showing the crystal structure of a molecule of the hormone human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG). It is produced by the developing embryo soon after conception and later by the syncytiotrophoblast (part of the placenta). It prevents the breakdown of the corpus luteum in the ovary, thereby maintaining progesterone production, which is critical for pregnancy in humans.
