Thrombopoietin hormone molecule. Computer model showing the secondary structure of a molecule of the hormone thrombopoietin (TPO). Beta sheets (arrows), alpha helices (ribbons) and random coils (wires) can be seen. TPO is a glycoprotein hormone that regulates the production of platelets by the bone marrow. It is produced mainly by the liver and the kidney and stimulates the production and differentiation of megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells that fragment into large numbers of platelets.
