Tuamotu Archipelago, satellite image. North is at top. Water is blue, vegetation is green, and shallow sand banks and coral atolls are light blue and white. This chain of atolls covers an area of the tropical Pacific the size of Western Europe. There are 78 different islands and atolls. The largest atoll in this chain, Rangiroa (top left), is the second-largest in the world. The volcanic Gambier Islands are at lower right. Image data obtained by the Landsat 5 and Landsat 7 satellites.
