Caption

A distinctive and large caterpillar of the fox moth (Macrothylacia rubi) noted for the dark and orange bands. A final moult before pupating will reveal a large and hairy caterpillar. Found in damp moors and heathland feeing on a variety of plants including heathers. Photographed in Somerset, UK, in August.
