Safety glasses are required by the occupational safety and health administration (OSHA) for all workers who have potential exposure to hazardous materials during the performance of their jobs. Laboratorians must wear safety glasses to protect themselves from splashes to the eyes of hazardous chemicals and fluids which might contain microrganisms. In addition, laboratorians will wear safety glasses which block ultraviolet (UV) radiation when reading electrophoresis gels under UV illuminators.
