The Lyle Center for Regenerative Studies, at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. The buildings at the Center are designed to minimize the amount of energy required for heating and cooling. Here a trellis structure on the south side of the building supports grapes, chayote, and other deciduous vines. The shade from the vines block direct sunlight from entering the building in the summer. In the winter, the vines lose their leaves and lower sun angles allow direct sunlight to penetrate into the interior spaces, passively warming the building. Also visible but inconspicuous are 4 solar heater panels on the roof. A recycling garbage bin is seen in front of the building. Photo Dec 2008.
