Caption

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a silicate ceramic material. Ceramics are mixtures of two or more materials that are treated under high temperatures to fuse them together. Silicate ceramics such as this may be used in place of metals in some engineering products, as they have better heat resistance and a good strength to weight ratio. The drawback of most ceramics is that they tend to be brittle. Magnification x 4000 at 5x7 inch size, x850 at 35mm size.
