Giant triton shells, forming part of a collection. The giant triton (Charonia tritonis), also known as Triton's trumpet, is a species of very large sea snail. These were over-collected on the Great Barrier Reef due to their high re-sale value to tourists. This resulted in a a population explosion of the crown-of-thorns starfish on which the giant triton feeds. The excess of this coral-eating starfish led to the destruction of huge areas of coral.
