False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an aluminium oxide ceramic material. Ceramics are made by heating a mixture of materials until they fuse together. The resultant ceramics are usually very heat resistant and have a high strength to weight ratio. They are, however, usually brittle. Here the light blue shapes are fragments of aluminium oxide, fused with a silicate substrate. Magnification x800 at 6x7cm size.
