Regions of Roman Britain, 4th century. Cover page for a Roman 'List of Offices' (Notitia Dignitatum) from the 4th century for the regions of Roman Britain. The five provinces named here are: Britannia Secunda, Valentia, Britannia Prima, Maxima Caesariensis, and Flavia Caesariensis. This is the period known as the Diocese of the Britains, with each diocese (province) headed by an official called a vicarius, hence the title Vicarii Britanniarum. This is a 15th-century copy of the manuscript, from Basel (1436), made for the Bishop of Padua.
