Astronaut Garrett Reisman during a training session at JSC with the CWRW (Cell Wall Resist Wall) investigation inside the Microgravity Sciences Glovebox (MSG). The Reverse Genetic Approach to Exploring Genes Responsible for Cell Wall Dynamics in Supporting Tissues of Arabidopsis Under Microgravity Conditions and Role of Microtubule-Membrane-Cell Wall Continuum in Gravity Resistance in Plants (CWRW) is a plant investigation comprised of two separate plant experiments referred to individually as Reverse Genetic Approach to Exploring Genes Responsible for Cell Wall Dynamics in Supporting Tissues of Arabidopsis Under Microgravity Conditions (Cell Wall) and Role of Microtubule-Membrane-Cell Wall Continuum in Gravity Resistance in Plants (Resist Wall). The Cell Wall portion of the investigation will explore the molecular mechanism by which the cell wall (rigid outermost layer) construction of supporting tissues in Arabidopsis thaliana are regulated by gravity. Cell Wall will determine if the supporting tissue in A.thaliana are achieved by coordinated actions of a defined set of cell wall related genes and that their gene expressions are regulated by gravity to adapt to the terrestrial atmospheric environment under differing gravity conditions. The Role of Microtubule-Membrane-Cell Wall Continuum in Gravity Resistance in Plants (Resist Wall) experiment will examine the resistance to the gravitational force in the Arabidopsis thaliana plants. Ground studies have indicated that structural or physiological continuum of microtubule-plasma membrane-cell wall is responsible for gravity resistance. Resist Wall aims to prove this hypothesis examining A. thaliana plants on the International Space Station (ISS).
