Kidney bean root. Light micrograph of a section through the root of a kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plant. At centre is the pith (blue). This is surrounded by xylem (red) cells, which transport water around the plant. The next layer consists of phloem (green) cells, which transport carbohydrates around the plant. Surrounding this are the cork cambium (brown), the epidermis (blue) and the outer cortex (dark brown).
