Begoinia stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a begonia (Begonia sp.) plant. At centre is a large area of pith, which contains starch grains (orange) a store of energy. The thick red ring is xylem tissue, which transports water around the plant. Outside of the xylem are phloem (small blue) cells and fibres (red), which transport carbohydrates around the plant. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
