Tongue cancer. Light micrograph of a section through a tongue with squamous cell carcinoma (SSC). SCC arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the epithelium (lining, across top) of the tongue. Risk factors include smoking and alcohol consumption. Treatment is with surgery and radiotherapy.
