Caption

Earth layers, computer artwork. The external layer shows the Earth's surface topography and atmosphere, including land, water, and vegetation (here, North America). The cutaway portion (upper right) shows the rocky crust, which is around 35 kilometres thick. Below this, the mantle (red/orange) is a viscous layer of rocks under high pressures and temperatures, extending downwards to a depth of around 2890 kilometres. The outer and inner core (not seen) are below the mantle, extending down to the centre of the Earth, 6360 kilometres below the surface.
