Ectopic pregnancy. Coloured 3-D ultrasound scan of an ectopic pregnancy in the abdominal cavity. The developing embryo is the circle labelled at right. In ectopic pregnancies the foetus grows outside of the uterus (womb, left), often in the Fallopian tubes. If the pregnancy is in the Fallopian tube and goes undetected, the tube will eventually burst and cause haemorrhaging into the mother's abdomen, which may be fatal. Surgery is performed to remove the foetus and repair or remove the Fallopian tube.
