Human liver. The liver processes nutrients and drugs absorbed from the digestive tract into forms easier for the body to use. All blood that leaves the stomach and intestines must pass through the liver before reaching the rest of the body. The liver controls the production and excretion of cholesterol, neutralizes and destroys poisonous substances, metabolizes alcohol, and discharges waste products into the bile. The liver is located behind the lower ribs on the right side of the abdomen.
