Caption

Patient with sickle-cell disease (sickle-cell anemia) receiving a blood transfusion as treatment. The inherited blood disorder is characterized by rigid, sickle-shaped red blood cells caused by a mutation in the hemoglobin gene. The disorder shortens life expectancy and is prevalent among people from regions where malaria is common, such as Sub-Saharan Africa.
