Kidney stones. Kidney stones removed from a patient compared to the size of a two pence piece. Kidney stones (renal calculi) are hard irregular shaped stones (calculi) primarily formed by crystallisation of the mineral salt calcium oxalate from the urine. They can cause severe pain as they pass down the ureter (urinary tract) and may need to be removed surgically using ultrasound.
