Caption

This color enhanced axial (cross sectional) gradient echo T2 weighted MRI image demonstrates typical findings of superficial siderosis which is the result of repeat episodes of subarachnoid hemorrhage. This results in staining of the cortical surface with iron. This is depicted as the very dark linear densities outlining the midbrain (the upper brainstem) and along the cerebellar sulci. This is typically associated with sensorineural hearing loss. The gradient echo T2 sequence is particularly sensitive to blood products.
