Foetus at 12 weeks (end of the first trimester), ultrasound scan. The foetus is seen with its head at centre and facing downwards with its feet towards the left. This foetus has a crown to rump (head to bottom) length (CRL, indicated by the dots and crosshairs) of just under 7.5 centimetres, which is a normal size for 12 weeks. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
