Colour enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Alstroemeria pollen grains. Alstroemeria is a genus of flowering plants in the family Alstroemeriaceae, originating from South America, and commonly known as the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas. Pollen grains, containing the male sex cells (gametes), are reproductive structures produced by the male parts of flowering plants. The hard outer casing (exine) protects the gametes during transit between flowers. Magnification 1800x when printed 12.7cm.
