Pituitary tumour. Light micrograph of a section through a pituitary gland (purple and light purple, centre) showing an adenoma (mass at bottom left), a benign (non-cancerous) tumour. The pituitary gland is a hormone-secreting gland at the base of the brain. Pituitary tumours can cause hormonal imbalances due to loss of glandular tissue, or the overproduction of hormones by tumour cells.
