Caption

Medical visualization of stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dialysis is required and a kidney transplant is likely necessary in the near future. The strongest risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) in developed countries are diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure), both tied to unhealthy diet and obesity. Being obese triples the risk of CKD. CKD is divided into five stages based on glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The glomeruli are very small structures in the kidneys that filter waste products from your blood and produce urine. By measuring the GFR, doctors are able to diagnose how well your kidneys are working.
