Caption

The risk of developing type 2 diabetes is higher if a parent or a sibling has the disease. Certain genes predispose individuals to getting diabetes, especially if they have are other risk factors. If a woman develops diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes), or if she gives birth to a baby that weighs more than 9 lbs (4.1 kg), her likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes later in life is increased.
