Nickel ion complexes. Four vials with nickel ion complexes. Left to right: when nickel(II) sulfate (NiSO4) is dissolved in water, it forms a green nickel aquo complex ((Ni(H2O)6)2+, 0.25M concentration). When ammonia (NH4OH) is added in excess to the solution, it forms a blue solution of hexaamminenickel(II) complex ((Ni(NH3)6)2+). When ethylenediamine (C2H4(NH2)2, en) is added to the solution, it forms a violet solution of tris(ethylenediamine)nickel(II) complex ((Ni(en)3)2+). When dimethylglyoxime (CH3C(NOH)C(NOH)CH3, dmgH2) is added to the solution, it forms a red solution of nickel bis(dimethylglyoximate) (Ni(ONC(CH3)C(CH3)NOH)2, Ni(dmgH)2).
