Shepherd's purse seeds. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through a fruit of the shepherd's purse (Capsell bursa-pastoris), showing eight seeds and embryos (red). Each seed has a seed coat (testa) enclosing an embryo. The largest seed (centre right) shows the complete embryo with a basal radical (above the white circle), then a short stalk (hypocotyl), then the top of shoot (plumule) and finally the two cotyledons or seed leaves. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
