Poppy fruit. Macro photograph of a transverse section through a fruit of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), showing the developing seeds (white). The fruit capsule has an outer wall (pericarp, green). The fourteen fused chambers (seven seen here) have radial walls (bearing placentas) which are incomplete and finish short of the centre (top centre). Over the walls are marginal placentas bearing white ovules. These ovules are developing into seeds.
