Kidney bean. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the fruit pod of the kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), showing a seed (red). The fruit wall (pericarp) is made of three layers: an outer exocarp; a middle mesocarp (pink); and an inner thick layer endocarp (dark-blue). The seed is attached to the fruit wall by a stalk (funicle), at the bottom. The seed coat (testa, black-blue) surrounds the two cotyledons (dark red), of the embryo.
