Dandelion flower head. Light micrograph of a transverse section through the flower head (capitulum) of a dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Each round object is a disc floret, and the section is halfway up each one. The disc florets have a corolla of five fused petals (blue outer circle of each floret). Inside each corolla is a ring of five fused stamens (light-red) with pollen grains (black dots, scattered through the section). Inside the stamens are two blue circles the bifurcated stigma, from the ovary. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
