Astronomy lecture poster, 1872. This poster advertises the last night of a set of lectures that demonstrated to the public a device called an orrery. The lectures, given by a Mr. C. H. Adams, took place at the Royal Adelphi Theatre, London, England. An orrery is a device used to demonstrate the movement of the planets and moons in the solar system. Public displays such as this were used to entertain and educate the public. This show had been running for 24 years, and similar lectures were delivered by Adams at other theatres as well.
