Leslie John Comrie (1893-1950), New Zealand astronomer and computer pioneer. Comrie studied chemistry at Auckland University College. He lost his left leg during fighting in World War I. While recovering he developed an interest in mechanical computation and its use in astronomy. After early work with the British Astronomical Association, and in the USA, he joined the British Nautical Almanac Office in 1926, and was superintendent from 1930 to 1936. He founded one of the earliest computer bureaus in 1938. Comrie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1950.
