Slate islands, satellite image. The Slate islands are an archipelago consisting of two main islands, five minor islands and numerous islets located in northern Lake Superior (blue), Ontario, Canada. The islands were formed by a meteor impact that occurred approximately 450 million years ago, during the Ordovician period, forming a crater about 32 kilometres in diameter.
