Caption

Teflon. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Teflon (polytetrafluoroethylene, grey) embedded in the engineering plastic POM (polyoxymethylene, yellow). Teflon, or PTFE, is a synthetic fluoropolymer that has a very low coefficient of friction. PTFE's resistance to van der Waals forces means that it is the only known surface to which a gecko cannot stick. For a close-up, see image number A850/0250. Magnification: x65 when printed 10 centimetres high.
