Pine wood structure. Polarised light micrograph of a longitudinal radial section through the stem wood (xylem) of the deal pine tree (Pinus mitis). The xylem is made up of tracheids (blue), long narrow cells with a single row of round bordered pits (red, yellow, and light blue) that allow water to pass through laterally. The large tracheids (blue area) on the left are the spring wood and the smaller tracheids (yelow-green) on the right are the autumn wood. Magnification: x103 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
