Caption

Engraving of the Roman god Neptune which appeared in Set of the Antique Gods by Hendrik Goltzius (1592). Neptune was the Roman god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. In the Greco-Roman mythology, he was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, each of them presiding over the realms of Heaven, our earthly world and the Underworld, respectively. Like Poseidon, Neptune was worshipped by the Romans also as a god of horses, under the name Neptunus Equester, a patron of horse racing.
