Virus Anniversary

In 1898 Dutch botanist Martinus Beijerinck uncovered the first evidence for the existence of viruses. Working with tobacco mosaic disease he realised that it was caused by an agent smaller than bacteria. Not until the invention of the electron microscope in the 1930's was the existence of the virus finally proved. Since then virus researchers are constantly battling to understand some of man's biggest killers.
