International Space Station First Elements

American Shuttle astronauts made history on December 10th, 1998 as they worked to connect in place the first two elements of the International Space Station. A Russian built component "Zarya" was the first element in space. The next component was the U.S. built "Unity" which was connected to Zarya. It will take a total of 45 missions to launch the 100 or so elements into space.
